What’s on My Mind/Real Letters:

It’s hard to believe it’s been six months since my daughter got married. One of my favorite things that she and her husband decided to do for their wedding was to write each guest a letter. They divided and conquered their list of 200+ and wrote personal messages to each and every attendee. The letters served as part of the place settings. Sweetest.thing.ever.🤍

Writing letters for each guest was a beautiful act of hospitality. Hospitality goes beyond inviting others into our homes for food and fellowship. It’s broader. The true definition of hospitality refers to the friendly, generous, and welcoming treatment of others. Its Latin root means “friendliness to guests”.

Reflecting back on Addie and Luke’s wedding letters got me thinking about how we can show hospitality through every letter we write. Welcoming someone in by letting that person feel seen, being generous with our words of encouragement and support for others, and giving friendship to the person we choose to write… our flavor of words tucked into a card is much the same as the flavors of food we would serve on a plate. One nurtures the tummy… one nurtures the heart. We value others in a very personal, hospitable way when we write letters.

Inspiring Me Today:

Having a space to write can make a difference in how we pen our thoughts. Whether it be a space filled with all the things that spur your thoughts and creativity, or a space that is sparse with only the necessities around you, having a dedicated place is part of a regular letter-writing hobby habit. What’s your favorite place to write or have quiet time? A desk at home? A coffee shop table? A quiet corner in the bookstore?

As you think about showing hospitality through letter writing, you may already have a list of names with which to start. You are ready to go!
